ACC is New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme which provides 24-hour no-fault personal injury insurance cover and covers anyone in New Zealand including overseas visitors. You do not require a doctor’s referral to get physiotherapy either under ACC or privately.
In order to get cover under ACC the following two criteria have to be met unless it is of a gradual onset due to work:
1. External Force i.e.
- Being hit by something
- Banging into something or someone
2. Gravity i.e.
- Throwing etc.
You do NOT require a doctor’s referral to get physiotherapy whether it be under ACC or privately unless you feel you have fractured something or your injury is caused by your work environment (see below). However, if you require time off work for your injury you do need to see your doctor to obtain a medical certificate. ACC pay 80% of your earnings if your claim is accepted, after taking your allocated 5 sick days off first.
Criteria required for OOS cover under ACC
The process to get ACC cover for OOS (occupational overuse syndrome) due to work starts with getting a referral from you GP. Your GP, yourself and your employer/manager will then receive paperwork that needs to be completed and returned. ACC then make a decision based on this as to whether you should be covered or not. Even if ACC decide that it doesn’t meet the required regulations, they will still pay for any physiotherapy treatment up to the date of that decision.
To get cover for OOS, ACC would require at least one of the following:
- Have you had to regularly work in excess of 8 hours per day,
- have you not been able to take breaks due to deadlines/workload
- or is your workstation not set up satisfactorily.
If you wish to discuss in more detail whether your condition is coverable under ACC or not please do not hesitate to ring and ask for Mandy.
